Photos Week 4: Flat Space

Photo 1: This one is pretty flat, with some exceptions. I was on a 16-35mm lens, which at this point I'm guessing was at about a 24mm. That is a tough focal length to deal with in this setting. There were literally depth cues everywhere! I oriented this shot to try and accentuate the flat plane behind the stage. However, the drummer's size difference, as well at the objects populating the frame give some sense of space. Also, the brick pattern on the stage also indicate subtle convergence. So, I'd say this photo was a mild example of flat space.

Photo 2: This is the same lens, zoomed in to a 35mm, which helps a bit. I also place the camera extremely close to the object, so that the background would blur out even more. That shallow depth of field is basically the only thing working for me here. There are tons of depth cues in the BG, but I just blurred them out to kingdom come. So this one is actually pretty flat!

Photo 3: This one is on a 200mm, which really helps to flatten things out. The shallow depth of field reduces BG detail, and the black plane is really flat. Although the drummer is in the BG and is the same distance away as always, the 200mm focal length make it seem almost as if that distance was a few inches. The two human figures in frame are almost the same size (compared with Photo 1). So, while not the most aesthetically pleasing, I find this photo to be the most successfully flat one.
